SANJEEV CHITNIS

Biography

I am an Orthopaedic Consultant and work in Glasgow area. I have been interested in dramatics since my childhood and have performed in various plays when I was in the university. As a practising doctor, it was difficult to work full time and take part in dramatics although I continued to do some occasional acting in short plays whilst in London. After moving to Glasgow I continued to deliver speeches at parties and have been MOC on a few occasions, usually in the hospital and in the community functions.
In 2006 i decided to revive and work for my passion, namely acting and joined an amateur acting group called Ankur. Cora Bisset was the lead producer and director and months of teaching culminated in the production of a play called
DETAINEE A which was staged in the Arches on three nights 26th to 28th June, 2007. I acted as a father of a terrorist and the play was fully sold on all three nights and had very good reviews.
Thereafter, Cora again produced and directed a compilation of short plays / skids which were staged in the Merchant City on two successive nights in 2009. All the acts were well received and were performed to full house although the capacity was small.

Ankur productions subsequently closed down and I started performing in various community events where I became very active.
In 2012, I interviewed a famous Bollywood and a stage actor from Mumbai called Atul Kulkarni at a school hall in Berkley street in Glasgow. The interview went very well and we had a audience of nearly 225 people.

In 2013, we produced and I acted and directed a play in Marathi language, called Chennai Express during Shri Ganesh Pooja celebrations in the same school as in 2012

In 2014, we produced and acted in a short play called SHOLAY 2 in Clarkson community hall for the Diwali celebrations. The play was a satire based on a famous Hindi movie called Sholay and became very famous in 1980s. I played the role of Gabbar, a dacoit. The audience was over 150.

In 2018, we produced and I acted in a play during Shri Ganesh Pooja Celebrations in Eastwood theatre in Glasgow. The play was in Marathi language and was called MALA INSURANCE HAWAY - translated as 'I want Insurance'. I played a retired man living with my wife.

In 2019, at the Shri Ganesh Pooja celebrations I acted in three short skids in Marathi language. This was recreation of the acts by a very famous playwright and actor from India by the name of P L Deshpande. All the performances were well received.
