James Young CV
I am in my late sixties. I have been a musician from a very young age playing in some high profile venues around Britain and Europe. In my time as a drummer I played with Glasgow based band Christian (Chris McClure) and the Section. Travelling the length and breadth of the UK and venturing into Europe in the early 70s. During this time we also did a variety of work for the BBC and STV and played in theatres all over including The Pavilion Glasgow, Kings theatre Glasgow, Kings Theatre Edinburgh, Edinburgh Playhouse, Kelvin Hall Arena, Glasgow Art Gallery and The Royal Albert Hall in London. I also did theatre work as part of the pit band. I recorded songs for the Scottish football Single and the Eurovision song contest in 1978 for the British entry written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. Since then I have been in a variety of bands and currently work with a Glasgow based AC/DC tribute band playing in local venues in Glasgow.
I started playing in bands at the age of seventeen, playing in dance halls and disco’s around Glasgow and Edinburgh for many years. I also went to play with a band in Germany in 1970. Moved back to Scotland and in 1972 joined the Chris McClure Section, which changed to Christian and the Section in 1973.
We had a lot of success and went on to tour Britain and the continent over an eight-year period. We also did a pilot show, and a six-week run of shows for STV and a couple of years later we moved to BBC Scotland, where we also did a six-week series of musical variety. We also did the occasional show for Grampian Television in Aberdeen.
I’ve worked in the pit in the Kings Theatre for Christian’s first Pantomime (Sinbad the Sailor). We worked on stage with famous names such as The Osmonds, The Drifters, Billy Connelly, Alexander Brothers, Johnnie Beattie, Jack Milroy, Cannon and Ball, Jimmy Cricket, and a host of other talented acts from Scotland. We also had the privilege of performing at two Royal Command Performances. During this time, we also recorded a couple of albums and a Scotland football single (Were on the march with Ally’s Army) and (Shine it on) which was written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter which was selected as British entry to the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest, in which he came third.
I left the band in 1980 after getting married and started my own business I still play from time to time and over the last few years. We reformed in 1990 thanks to Mr. Ian Gordon manager of the Pavilion Glasgow to perform in the “Please Stay” show which ran for two weeks to packed houses. We repeated this for the following two years. Since then I have been keeping busy with a contract with the NHS. I have also been recording with some friends and playing with my new band in (The Hard Rock Café) Glasgow and the “Ferry”.
